A network to share best practices for children with special needs
Back to school means backpack awareness time! The 3rd Wednesday of September each year is designated as Backpack Awareness Day. This year it falls on September 19, 2012. According to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) updated recommendations suggest that a backpack should weigh no more than 10% of the child’s total body weight. This would mean, for example, that a 100-lb. student should not carry a backpack weighing more than 10lbs., yet studies show that over 55% of children carry a backpack that is heavier than these recommended guidelines.
Karen Jacobs, an OT and Clinical Professor at Boston University’s Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitative Sciences, went on campus to talk with students on backpack awareness and safety. Watch this clip for her findings along with some great insights and tips:
Once again this year we urge you to get involved with Backpack Awareness Day at your school or clinic. You can get more information at AOTA. Let’s be sure we are taking a load off of our children and the students we serve!
