Guidelines for Choosing a Therapist

Choosing a therapist is a very important aspect of your child’s care and can have a large impact on overall improvement. Some therapists have certain beliefs about therapy based on their experience or what they've learned, and it may impact their treatment plan. A good guide to ensure you're choosing a therapist with proven strategies is to find out if they use evidenced based practices (EBP). A therapist who utilizes evidenced based research in their therapy plan uses decision-making therapy strategies where implementing therapy is based on the best available research, experience and resources while also taking into consideration patient needs and preferences.

In some instances, the therapist may choose you. In most public school systems, there are well-trained capable therapists including occupational, physical and speech therapists hired by the county. These therapists are held to state and national standards of care including using evidence-based decision making in therapy goals for your child. In general, these therapists work together as a team to benefit the children they serve. They are trained to work together with your child’s teacher using the traditional IEP (Individual Education Plan) to meet your child’s goals.

You can check out the respective associations dealing with occupation, physical and speech Therapy to get a better idea of the role of each therapist.

Here are some general guidelines and questions you can ask yourself when choosing a therapist:

  1. Location: Make sure the location and times fit your schedule.
  2. Specialty: Most therapists are trained to treat a gamut of disabilities and, in some instances, you may want to inquire if your therapists specializes in the area of your concern.
  3. Age: Some therapists have the most training and experience with school-age children while others focus on early intervention (birth to 3 years) and yet others are more experienced with adults. Be sure to pick a therapist who works with your child’s age group.
  4. Insurance: Contact both the facility and the therapist to confirm they take your insurance carrier.
  5. Quality/Recommendations: Be sure to get feedback on the facility and the therapist you choose. Not every therapist is a good fit for every child, but solid recommendations can make you feel more comfortable picking the therapist you need.
  6. Inquire if your therapist uses Evidence Based Research to support the therapy they implement.
  7. Ask the question, "how do you plan to include me (the parent) in my child’s therapy?"
  8. Ask, "What skills will you focus on in therapy?"
  9. Ask yourself, "Do I/does my child like the therapist?"
  10. Ask, "Are we making progress?" Make realistic goals with the therapist. Keep in mind you are an integral part of your child’s therapy since you're with your child far more often. Re-evaluate often to be sure you are both on the right track.

What guidelines or questions have you asked yourself to ensure you're picking the right therapist for your child?
