My Special Needs Network

A network to share best practices for children with special needs

We are homeschoolers and sometimes use sensory bins and playdough activities for learning or fun.  This year, I plan to have both available whenever we have learning times so the kids can use them to self-regulate.  I would love to hear about your favorite uses for these, sensory bin "ingredients", tips, etc.

Meredith~ I will have to try making some moon sand! It seems like great fun! Thanks for posting.

Look for the recipe online.  I don't remember what the ratio is. :)

I have numerous small items that are used to develop those tiny little finger muscles. I collect tongs of all sizes and have students pick up the items and sort them into different containers. Dollar tree has clear serving trays with compartments that make sorting wonderful. Sorting items range from small erasers, coins, nuts and bolts. Any tiny item that can be picked up works in that bin.

Dollar tree has clear serving trays with compartments that make sorting wonderful. Sorting items range from small erasers, coins, nuts and bolts, anything that looks "grown-up" etc. Any tiny item that can be picked up works in that bin. Those who don't have the ability to use the tong, but can use their fingers get a good fine motor finger work-out too. Finger exercises with a marble is also fun. One moves the marble back and forth between his/her fingers with that hand's fingers only. These activities especially help those little ones who resist using pencils or writing tools. They don't know they are getting a fine motor work-out anyway.

A very trustworthy source (with a wonderful blog) for moon sand:  http://fairydustteaching.blogspot.com/2011/05/make-your-own-moon-sa...

Also, pool noodles can be cut up and put into a sensory table, with large lacing string or large oversized pipe cleaners, or the cut up pool noodles can be placed in a small plastic baby swimming pool for a fun, sensory experience.

WOW! What a wonderful idea.  I can't wait to put some of these items in my sensory tubs.  I teach Special Day Class/moderate-severe with specialized academic instruction.  I am always looking for items that are cheap, easy to make and can be done without having to place an order then waiting for them to arrive.

Thanks

Instasnow is another fun tactile experience as well! Also slime!

Love these ideas. I also read Martianne's play dough blog and got lots of new ideas there as well. I look forward to using them in my special ed classroom next year, and with my sweet baby if she EVER decides to use her hands!

What is Instanow?

Becky
