For both younger and older students...I would recommend a CD player with Mozart Tune Up your Mind CD. It is totally 'the best bang for the buck!' This instrumental music is great for focus and concentration as well as writing assignments. I can't believe it is Back To School already!
Wow - love the ideas!  I can't wait to share them with my parents at Back to School Night.  Keep the info coming.  I have parents set the microwave timer, 10 min for Kinder, 15 for 1st grade and 20 for 2nd grade.  When the time is up, kiddos can stop working.  I teach special education, severe handicapped - specialized academic instruction K-3.  When they know how much time they have and that time actually ends, they are more likely to try their homework.  If "tonight is just not the night for homework and child refuses, it is not the end of the world".  I have parents write a little note on the homework and send it back.  Bringing the homework home and back to school is my emphasis for these little ones.  It is much like going to work.  When you bring your tools, you can work.  Generally, the child will do their homework the next time.  I use the timed timer in class and absolutely love it!
We use a visual schedule, so he can anticipate when it's time to go to school  with a school bus picture.

Love the CD tip, Sue.  Thanks.

we use timers, visual schedules, etc

Also, more improtant than organization, I think, is simply getting enough sleep!

YES to them getting enough sleep - makes a world of difference.
