My Special Needs Network

A network to share best practices for children with special needs

Hello, I have a grandson who lately has been putting everything in his mouth:  coat collar, collar, pencils, eraser, small objects, small toys...and also, I notice he has been very loud. . just out of the blue he would just hollar or maybe he would just be loud with strange sounds.  He has been doing these at school as well from what the school has been sharing with me.  any suggestions on how I could help him.  If I lived by myself I would just let him be with it but I am staying with a friend and looking for a place but till then....help.  He is six years old, does have sensory intergration disorder, adhd, and something else, but can't come up with whats its called at the moment but it is alcohol effect.  behavior something...sorry...

I might try some heavy work and movement. Some examples are swinging, playgrounds, taking out the garbage, mopping your floor, vacuuming, carrying in your groceries, playing catch.... you get the point. It sounds like he is having a hard time processing and is using his mouth and voice to regulate his sensory system. Another approach might be heavy hand work, like playdough, cooking, baking, silly putty, etc.
Maybe some oral motor? A child I work with has SID, also VERY oral. She keeps a chewy in her mouth at all times and that really helps her. I also use oral motor vibratory tools with her, jaw massage - these also help. There are chewy pencil toppers you can use also, instead of them chewing the eraser.
