Have a new grandchild. He has bilateral UE weakness, right significantly greater than left and also has a right MF contracture at the PIP joint. Tends to keep right hand fisted (thumb out). Showed PROM techniques, suggested they use the wrist rattle to increase visual/auditory interaction with the RUE, Provided lights/sound play mats, to encourage prone weight bearing and supine/sidelying reach. Any other suggestions????????
It is very difficult to advise with contractures as we don't know what they look like or their severity, so I would strongly recommend that your new grandchild be followed by PT and OT who can best assess and monitor his progress. Generally at a new born stage splinting and PROM are the best treatments. As he gets older, weight bearing through his extremities will assist with some of the range.
THank you! He is receiving PT and I am his OT. We have splinted the hand, and it seems to be somewhat improving. He has full PROM of the elbow but does not actively flex the elbow. Was wondering about fabricating an dynamic elbow flexion splint that would position the elbow at 90 degress, but allow flor active extension.
